Caily Newsome UCLA Student Death: Further details released after fatal incident involving University of California, Los Angeles student near De Neve

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — June 9, 2025 — Authorities have released further details in the death of 21-year-old Caily Newsome, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was found deceased near the De Neve residential complex on campus.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Newsome died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Her death has been officially ruled a suicide.

The tragic incident occurred on school grounds, prompting a swift response from UCLA Police and emergency services. The investigation was led by Investigator Lianna Darabedyan and Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Edwin Partovi.

Newsome, described by friends and classmates as bright, driven, and compassionate, was pursuing her studies at UCLA and had been active in several campus organizations.

University officials expressed condolences in a statement Monday, emphasizing the importance of community support and mental health awareness. “Our hearts go out to Caily’s family, friends, and all members of the UCLA community affected by this profound loss,” the statement read. “We encourage anyone struggling to reach out — you are not alone.”

Counseling services are being offered to students and staff through UCLA’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
